Review: Star Trek: Discovery: Dead Endless

Star Trek: Discovery: Dead Endless by Dave Galanter My rating: 4 of 5 stars Without spoiling the entire story, this takes place in another reality where the crew of the Discovery discover mycelial Culber and we get to know a little bit more about what Hugh experienced.  Notable connections: Ephram - the tardigrade from one of the short treks, and a mention of everyone's

Adieu (?) Locast

Seems like it's lights out for Locast - at least for now.  This was a non-profit streaming service that offered web-based re-broadcasting of local over-the-air channels. This was a great service because I refuse to rent a cable box to access local channels (in the before times I was able to plug in the cable directly to my TV and watch the local channels, not any longer...), and digital antenna

Review: Star Trek: Voyager: Distant Shores Anthology: Star Trek Voyager Anthology

Star Trek: Voyager: Distant Shores Anthology: Star Trek Voyager Anthology by Marco Palmieri My rating: 4 of 5 stars I wasn't sure about a collection of short stories, but there are some really great stories in here that fill in small gaps through the various seasons of Voyager. The one with the doctor connecting to Blink of an Eye was one of my favorites. I also

Review: Star Trek Archives: Best of Peter David

Star Trek Archives: Best of Peter David by Peter David My rating: 3 of 5 stars The stories were good.  The art style doesn't particularly appeal to me, but it didn't really get in the way of enjoying the stories.  The "worthy" storyline felt like "the crew of the enterprise meets superheroes". Review: Console Wars: Sega, Nintendo, and the Battle that Defined a Generation

Console Wars: Sega, Nintendo, and the Battle that Defined a Generation by Blake J. Harris My rating: 5 of 5 stars Quite an interesting story. It picks up right after the Master System and ends with the Sega Saturn.  I would have liked to have known a bit more (Dreamcast era, and Sega getting out of the console business), but maybe that's for another book

Review: 25 Years of Ed Tech

25 Years of Ed Tech by Martin Weller My rating: 5 of 5 stars Great overview of the past 25 years of Edtech.  I wish some more specifics were covered (specific platforms, especially defunct ones like Google Wave and other very specific Web 2.0 ones that are no longer around), but this was a good survey of the field. I really enjoyed listening to this in podcast

Review: Bullshit Jobs: A Theory

Bullshit Jobs: A Theory by David Graeber My rating: 5 of 5 stars Awesome thesis, pretty spot on IMO. This was a worthwhile read. Looking back at this, I am wondering what hiring managers, staffing managers, and the modern workplace would look like (keeping in mind work-from-home and other things that emerged from this pandemic), if we kept the content of this

Review: Too Much and Never Enough: How My Family Created the World's Most Dangerous Man

Too Much and Never Enough: How My Family Created the World's Most Dangerous Man by Mary L. Trump My rating: 4 of 5 stars Interesting to see intergenerational trauma turned into intergenerational psychopathy. I read this back in early spring after Trump exited office. So much facepalm with this presidency, and it could have all been avoided if people in the know about how dysfunctional

Adieu | Defiance 2050

Never ended up beating Nim... Well... I guess the inevitable happened!  Defiance 2050 is now dead.  This is something that happened back in April, but I was otherwise occupied so I didn't write much about it then.  The original Defiance (aka "D13" to the gaming community) was turned off last year.  I guess the promise of keeping 2050 up and running, and giving the players some
