TV - Flash Gordon

Here's another TV show I started a while back, but I just got around to finishing.  I came across this one on Plex one afternoon while browsing the free streaming offerings a year or so ago. I had never watched Flash Gordon (the original movie), but I think I need to track it down and see how it compares.  I guess this 2007-era TV show is loosely based on the comic strip. The one season

One more on the vintage tech!

Pocket Surfer 2OK, I sort of felt like I should have an honorable mention category for all the things I was going to post, and that I had drafts started back in my drafts blogs in 2019, but ultimately I ended up deleting, due mostly to a change of interests.  Still, here's a list of devices that didn't make the cut in my technology retrospective:1996-2013 Windows Handheld PCs (Wikipedia, YouTube)2000

Vintage Tech - Ogo

Here's another from the 2019 backlog...This time it's a device that's not all that well known: The IXI Ogo. I remember when Cingular (now AT&T) was selling these internet communicators in 2004.  The device was a little too late in the market, or perhaps it was a device that innovated in one way, while smartphones were innovating in other ways that ultimately surpassed the need for this kind

Vintage Tech: Nokia N-Gage

Original N-GageHere's another one from the "drafts" pile from 2019 that I wanted to do a little write-up about, but...well it got lost in the blogging shuffle 😂. My original intent with this series of looking back at older tech was to talk a bit about the specs and the general reception, but since there are enough blogs, wikis, and YouTubers who already do that, why add to the chorus?  So,

Gemini PDA - A blast from the past

Well... Back in 2019 I had started to write this post, when the Gemini PDA was relatively new, and ... well it got forgotten in my drafts folder 😂.  The images of the device pictured are that of the Gemini PDA, which is a connected PDA that aims to replicate the look and feel of those older Psion Series 5 PDAs from the late 90s. The device runs Android, and it has a slot for a SIM so

Google I/O 2023 🤤

I don't often pay attention to dev-conferences these days, but every so often something catches my eye.  This time around it was Google's annual I/O event where new devices were announced.  The Pixel 7a looks interesting. It looks like a solid replacement for my aging Moto Z3, but it's still a slab of glass.  It seems like a lot of the cool stuff for this phone is under the hood in Android

Review: Dogfight: How Apple and Google Went to War and Started a Revolution

Dogfight: How Apple and Google Went to War and Started a Revolution by Fred Vogelstein My rating: 3 of 5 stars Not a bad book.  Having just finished "The One Device: The Secret History of the iPhone" which only deals with the development of the iPhone, this book was both shorter and covered both Apple and Google.  As such, I think this book plays a

Microsoft's cancelled AndromedaOS

The other day Windows Central published a look at Microsoft's canceled mobile operating system, codenamed Andromeda. This was going to be the next iteration of Windows Mobile, which bit the dust.  It's too bad, because I think that Microsoft had something there with the whole Metro UI, and they could have bankrolled the OS until it caught on, but the janky transition from WM7 to WM8 to WM10

Adieu Blackberry!

Well, that's an end of an era!  Old Blackberry devices no longer function as of yesterday!  I remember the Blackberry craze well.  At the time (circa 2004-2005) the Blackberry craze was pretty strong on my campus with everyone of any "importance" on campus having one (subsidized by the campus of course). Lots of IT folks had one, and so did many managers.  Blackberry messenger

Nostalgia sells...and it's expensive!

As I was browsing my RSS feeds the other day I saw that Motorola has a new RAZR phone coming out.  I still have my old RAZR 3G in a drawer somewhere as a backup phone in case my smartphones die 😁 (wonder if the battery is still any good).  The original RAZR phone was an insane $500 (if memory serves me right) for a "dumb" phone that was network-locked.  This is at a time when
