Review: Situated Learning

Situated Learning by Jean Lave My rating: 4 of 5 stars A book I've been meaning to read ever since I was introduced to communities of practice in 2005.  It only took a dissertation as an excuse to pull it off the bookshelf.  Not a bad introduction if you're looking for a historical view of CoPs. I am sure there are other books on my bookshelf where

Review: Control

Control by David Mack My rating: 5 of 5 stars I really loved this story. Bashir has a future as a spy ;-) I am a bit annoyed that they killed off Sarina. I am wondering if this is really the end of S31 and control...From the book cover:No law… no conscience… no mercy. Amoral, shrouded in secrecy, and answering to no one, Section 31 is the mysterious covert operations division

New school seal?

It's been a  while since I've paid attention to the school's seal. I used to see it all the time when I worked for Media Services (in front of podiums, and often engraved in wood), but today I noticed that we have a new design, with our school colors, and our school emblem (the beacon, which is a lighthouse). The previous seals seemed to have been based on the Commonwealth's flag.

Review: Disavowed

Disavowed by David Mack My rating: 5 of 5 stars A section 31 novel meets mirror universe.  This one was a fun novel to read since it tackled two topics that are not common on screen. It's a follow-up from both past literature (Bashir after Typhon Pact) and on-screen happenings (Bashir and what happened in the mirror universe on DS9). Definitely a must-read.From

Review: Shadow

Shadow by Dean Wesley Smith My rating: 3 of 5 stars I wouldn't necessarily call this a Section 31 story.  It's basically a voyager story where the B-plot is about a former S31 operative who sabotaged the ship (which makes the A-Plot harder to achieve).  The A-Plot was interesting though. From the book jacket:They are the self-appointed protectors of the Federation.

Review: Star Trek Abyss

Abyss by David Weddle My rating: 4 of 5 stars While this is the 4th book in the series, I ended up reading it third (my reading order has been TOS --> TNG ---> DS9 --> VOY). Bashir gets "recruited" by Section 31 for a mission in the badlands to reign in a former S31 agent who is genetically enhanced and sees himself as a new Khan-type (or perhaps Khan

Review: Star Trek Rogue

Rogue by Andy Mangels My rating: 5 of 5 stars A star trek novel about voter suppression and joining the federation (or not) - oh yeah, and section 31.  Also a nice connection to the TNG episode Tapestry :-) Description from the back:They are the self-appointed protectors of the Federation. Amoral, shrouded in secrecy, answerable to no one, Section 31 is the

Review: Star Trek Section 31: Cloak

Cloak by S.D. Perry My rating: 4 of 5 stars Decided to give the Section 31 anthology a try.  This one was a relatively short story taking place in the TOS universe with a certain clandestine faction trying to backward engineer a Romulan cloaking device. What could possibly go wrong? ;-)  Overall, rather interesting, and we get to see a bit of McCoy's

Review: Star Trek Discovery: Die Standing

Die Standing by John Jackson Miller My rating: 5 of 5 stars This was an interesting novel that takes place between Season 1 and Season 2 of Star Trek Discovery.  It provides for a lens into Mirror Georgiou's background in the Terran Empire, as well as her work in Section 31. A big part of this novel seems to be dealing with a trio of alien civilizations,

Review: Star Trek: Discovery: Dead Endless

Star Trek: Discovery: Dead Endless by Dave Galanter My rating: 4 of 5 stars Without spoiling the entire story, this takes place in another reality where the crew of the Discovery discover mycelial Culber and we get to know a little bit more about what Hugh experienced.  Notable connections: Ephram - the tardigrade from one of the short treks, and a mention of everyone's
