It's interesting, AvantGo may be gone, but it's spiritual successors do live on!  I had tried both Instapaper and ReaditLater. I ended up going with ReaditLater for pricing reasons. Yes, I know that $5 for instapaper isn't that much to spend, but ReaditLater was on sale for $3, so I bought that - the way I see it, I just got some coffee money to sip while I read the news!

In any case, Christian pointed me to a new competitor in this arena, Spool. The first thing that came to mind with the name was printer spools, and then I thought of thread for some weird reason. In any case, I checked Spool out and it's an interesting concept. Instead of just focusing on text, which is what ReaditLater and Instapaper focus on, Spool also sucks down and creates offline availability for media files! This way, when I'm commuting, and I have saved a blog post that contains a video or audio file, I can easily listen to it without being online!

The one thing that Spool does not have, and that I would love, is what ReaditLater offers: ability to send your content elsewhere, For example I often share on my Google Reader RSS list things that I've read in Instapaper that I find interesting, and perhaps others do as well.  Since Spool is beta, I think that these feature additions will probably make their way into the product in the future, but it's definitely something to keep an eye out for.
