The Star Trek: Renegades kickstarter, as of this writing, still has about 10 days to go, and they still need another $100k to raise their minimum goals for creating episode 2.  The stretch goal for this, at least the first one, is $600k, which I really doubt that they will make.  The first stretch goal means that they will also make episode 3 in this round.  While the story of Renegades is interesting, I think that the announcement from the writer (or was it the director) that they weren't going to pursue  the original 12-episode plan due to CBS's announcement of a new Star Trek Series in 2017 really hurt the project.  I'd much rather have something like the Continuing Mission or New Voyages where we get episodes, even if they are sporadic.  Without the guarantee that there will be more, I am wondering why people are donating.  That said, I do hope they meet the $600k mark so that they get to make 3 episodes.


One thing I was thinking, before this week, was more in-line of the perks for such kick starters, and I was wondering about kickstater motivation and economics.  So, in the first episode I ended up getting one of their unique (and pretty nice) communicator badges. I think this made me a donor after the kickstarter has ended since I get notifications from them.  That said, I am wondering what other perks can be made available to those who donate.  The video will ultimately be free on the web, so if you prefer to wait, and see it for free eventually, then why donate? Or, rather, why donate more than a cup of coffee?  Sure, donors can get a DVD or Blu-ray disc, they can get extra commentary, scripts, and so on, but these are really not for every type of person who might be interested in donating.  My thing was the commbadge.  What about the newly minted rank insignia - or something else of limited run to entice people (and collectors) to get something that won't be available later?

One of the things that is new, in this kickstarter (but late in the game, it seems), is the perk of having your name and semblance immortalized in a comic (see beneath for a sample).  This is pretty cool, but that perk also carries a $300 price-tag...which is a little beyond my scope. For $350 you can get a character in Renegades novels...again - a little beyond my price-range as a fan.  I guess what I am wondering is what entices people to donate to something like this when you know that there won't be more episodes in the 'season' format.
