One might think that my brain is rotting from too much TV these days ;-)  I've been continuing on my quest to wrap up old TV shows that I had started to watch at one point or another, but I had either stopped watching, or they were cancelled and I had not read the comics that came out as continuations.  This time around there is a show called Alphas.  The show was on the SyFy network, and it was cancelled after just 2 seasons.

I had actually watched the first season, but the second season was something I skipped out on.  It didn't help with my motivation that I really didn't like about half of the main characters :p.

The story revolves around a group of humans with special abilities (heightened senses, hyperkinesis, increased mental abilities, power of suggestion, and so on) as they work to uncover crimes, as well as the origins of these so called alphas.  The story wasn't bad, it reminded me a lot of a light version of X-men or mutant-X (with the notable exception that these mutants aren't as visibly mutated as some of the x-men - no powers like shooting thunder out of their hands).  At the center of the story is an alpha who has been around for 150 years. He was a soldier in the US civil war and he discovered that he was an alpha when he was shot and not killed (and he's still alive!).  I guess he's had a chip on his shoulder ever since ;-).

The second season was better, and some of the cast became more endearing, but I guess that wasn't enough to save the show.  The series ended in a huge cliffhanger where some sort of  bomb goes off that only affects living humans, and the only unaffected person is Gary (the alpha of the team that can 'see' signals and broadcasts). This bomb was created by Parish (the 150 year old alpha) to go off on his anniversary of discovering that he was an alpha (so...a birthday bomb, eh?)

It's too bad that this series didn't get a third season.  The series did have potential, but it didn't really seem to have had a good direction in the first season, and while season 2 got better, I guess SyFy doesn't like to keep experimenting (see Defiance!)
