A while back, I came across another forgotten 90s era TV series, Robocop! This was a one-season series, Canadian-made, which really felt a lot like the first Robocop movie. The small interludes and news commentary from OCP-sponsored television shows really captured the dystopian capitalistic and consumeristic culture portrayed by Verhoven's Robocop.

The pilot episode runs two hours, and was adapted from a discarded RoboCop 2 script, Corporate Wars, by the writers of the original RoboCop, Edward Neumeier and Michael Miner. It's interesting that many of the characters' names were also altered from their movie counterparts due to rights issues.  While it was a bit weird to not see Peter Weller as Robocop, I quickly got used to the new Murphy/Robo.

There were two weird things about this series. One was the inclusion of a hologram.  The series introduced a supercomputer that manifests itself as a hologram. The hologram takes the form of the woman whose brain powers the machine. Like RoboCop, she, too, has been changed from a human being into a machine. It seems that this era of television has a thing about holography, because a number of contemporary sci-fi TV series also feature holograms.

The other weird thing about the series was a narrative oddness: The OCP Chairman kept getting involved in the plots, sort of like some weird sidekick. I don't think the movies had Robocop and the OCP leadership that entangled, so having such a high-powered character partner up with a robotoc beat cop was weird...

All things considered, this is a must watch for fans of the Robocop universe.
